GREEN to CLEAN PROJECT

GREEN to CLEAN PROJECT

Water purification “golf” balls. Each ball that drops into the water makes the river happier. Here’s a fun way to help clean our rivers.

A scene during the event.

This project was undertaken by the Naniwaza team within Dentsu Design Ninja.
It sought to develop new ideas and hints about how to improve our water quality.

How it works --
Artificial island "greens" are floated out some distance from the bank of a river
running through the center of Osaka.
From the bank, the golfer tee's off, so to speak, and tries to deliver her or his ball
into the hole in the floating green.
It's not an easy shot (and the golfers are not pros!). Most balls miss the island.
But no matter -- each ball that misses sinks into the water and releases bacteria specially developed
to encourage biodegrading of impurities in the water.

It's all fun and for a great cause. The event was a hit.
Many came down to the riverbank to participate,
and the project got intense media coverage in newspapers, magazines, television and radio.
It also won a Bronze award, Outdoor category, at ADFEST 2013 conducted in Pattaya, Thailand.

"Naniwaza" is a made-up word combining Naniwa, the old name for the Osaka area,
and waza, a Japanese word for outstanding technique and technology.
The Naniwaza team has as its mission the vitalization of East (Higashi) Osaka's small and medium-scaled enterprises.
These firms have technology and knowhow; getting design and new ideas into the mix can help link
that competence to the handling of societal needs, and increase the profile of these firms.
